Storm Name New Head Football Coach

TAMPA, FL --The Tampa Bay Storm are proud to introduce James Purnell as the team’s new Head Football Coach ahead of the 2025 National Gridiron League season. A respected figure in the metro Tampa football community, Coach Purnell brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and local pride to a Storm organization eager to make its mark in professional football.

Coach Purnell’s coaching career spans over a decade in high school football across the Tampa Bay area. He has built a reputation for developing disciplined, competitive teams and mentoring student-athletes on and off the field. His teams have consistently demonstrated strong fundamentals, toughness, and high character—traits that align perfectly with the culture the Storm aim to create in their return to action.

“Coach Purnell is a proven leader with deep roots in the Tampa Bay football community,” said National Gridiron League President Joe McClendon III. “He understands what it means to lead with integrity, build a team from the ground up, and inspire players to reach their highest potential. We’re excited for him to lead this new era of Storm football.”

Throughout his high school coaching career, Purnell has guided multiple programs to playoff appearances, earned regional playoff appearances, and helped dozens of players earn college football opportunities. His ability to connect with players and build strong team culture has made him a respected mentor and leader throughout the region.

Now stepping into the professional ranks, Coach Purnell is ready to bring that same energy and dedication to the Storm as they prepare for their inaugural season in the National Gridiron League. 

The Tampa Bay Storm will host their home games at Storm Stadium at the Ellis-Methvin Sports Complex in Plant City, Florida. With training camp approaching and the 2025 season on the horizon, Coach Purnell will lead the charge in assembling his coaching staff and finalizing the team’s roster.
